Colin Wicks writes about his time in the 1940's at PGS

Colin Wicks writes

I enclose a photo of the Purley school trip to Holland in 1949. I am the young boy in the middle foreground holding a book. On the far right , standing, is the Dutch boy whose father worked at the Dutch Embassy, and assisted in the organisation of the trip, and third to his left is Mr Jewitt who organised the trip. We stayed at YHA’s across Holland, I think this photo was taken outside Arnhem YHA. The first holiday abroad was to Switzerland in 1948 - I think we must have been one of the first schools to organise trips abroad after the war, very enterprising !
I note on the web site a photo of Mr Hutchinson, who was my form teacher in the 5th year, I had a lot of respect for this lovely man, who showed patience and understanding for a lad who had difficulty with maths. I corresponded with him after leaving school at 16.
I went on to Art School at Kingston on Thames (Where I met my wife - we will be celebrating our Diamond Wedding in August ), And I spent most of my life teaching Art in a Comprehensive school in rural North Yorkshire.

I have many fond memories of life at Purley School - including the wonderful “Sports Concerts” put on by all sections of the school community. I could enlarge on much of the above, but have few photo’s - just my school reports, not very encouraging, but against all the odds I did matriculate ! The exam board only asked those questions I had revised !! I took the last of the old GSC before being replaced by the GCSE.

MARTIN JONES COMMENTS "I was very sorry to hear of the death of Mrs Ananin. Irene came to Purley whilst I was there in the 1960's and was (to the best of my recollection) the only lady teacher on the staff during my time at the school. Our paths never crossed whilst I was at Purley but I know that she was well liked and well respected by the staff and boys who valued her friendly but no-nonsense approach to teaching. I was glad that I was able to chat at the reunions which we attended, in particular the reunion in 2007. RIP Irene and my sympathy to her family."
