Steve Dawe RIP 05/10/50 to 24/09/12

Dickie Bird has told us the sad news that Steve Dawe passed away this morning, 24th September, after a courageous and long battle with cancer. He was surrounded by family and he departed peacefully.

Many of you will remember Steve from rugby, cricket and basketball at school and obviously from Purley RFC and the Old Purleians CC in later years.

A terrific guy with many friends, he was a man with fantastic humour and humility. Always understated but with an uncanny ability to entertain people with a multitude of stories, comments and ultimate one-liners, we shall miss him and feel privileged to have been touched by his friendship.

Help needed from the Ash family

Martin Ash had a father at Purley in the 1920's along with his many brothers. They are researching family history and want to find out more. He was Sidney Ash along with Martin's uncles Cyril Ash, Peter Ash, Lionel Ash and Mervyn Ringer.

As you can see from the Honours Board < long gone > there are no mentions of anyone pre WW2. If anyone has any information let me know and I will pass it on.

Mr Davis - a sighting

I seem to remember someone asked if Mr Davis (Davies?) – sorry don’t know his first name – who I think taught Geography when I was at PGS in the mid 70s (he also offered encouragement during cross country running as I recall) – was still alive.

Happy to report that I just passed him as he was walking at fairly high speed in the other direction in the subway at Purley station about ten minutes ago.

Regards

Andrew Wilson

Editor's Note  - I believe this is him in 1975 sitting alongside Jack Godwin (RIP) - him- Bill Rainforth & Derek Akers.
