ED's Note: Howard Cheesman writes :I attended PGS from 1952/1957 and the gentleman looks like Mr W Carey a geography teacher. I remember him being on one of the early trips to the "barn" in the Llaqnberis Pass in North Wales.

Malcolm Colllins 1966 writes

Your favourite memory of a teacher ?Vic Gilbert " The P is silent as in swimming pool" Birchill when parents were late paying the Sports Subscription "after all you are not paying for my new car THIS TIME". Stacack " I tell you tousand tousand times". I could go on for ages!!!
What you have been doing for 30+ years ?Many years in Life Insurance, Graphic Design and ended work as Sales Director for a Car Tuning company, My God retirement was a long time coming but its here and more to the point so am I!!
Comments:Trying to put the memories of Purley GS out of my mind. How depressing that so many of us either hate the place/masters or only remember the slippering and cane. I am now hidden away in SW France with cats and a wonderful second wife. Nice to see so many names from the past, is Chris Collins (no relation) out there, you still owe me for one stroke of the cane - remember? Regarding the comments above I sometimes wonder if some (all?) of us have a case for abuse regarding the school. Anyone remember the newaspaper RAD during Arthur Jewitt's reign as Acting Headmaster when we asked in print 'when he was going to stop acting'. If Ian Curror reads this I wonder if he remembers getting so worked up about the successful demand to have non-classical music played prior to Assembly (also Ian what happened to Pete Hopkins?). Anyone else remember the coffee cupboard I built in the classroom at the end of the old library? I left about 6 one third of a pint milk bottles in there they must have gone off by now! I was very sorry not to have got to the last reunion I wanted to make sure that the place is really being demolished.

Peter Humphrey writes from China

Thanks for both of your emails and my apologies for promising a prompt follow-up but actually turning out to be very tardy. At the time of your emails I was in the United States with my family – my wife Ying and my 15-year-old son Harvey – attempting to have a holiday but as usual never fully escaping from our China business in this era of round-the-clock correspondence.

What led me to you was my accidental discovery of that partial alumni list on the internet. My natural curiosity was poked into checking whether Graham’s email address was still operational, which it was. I had stumbled on the list when I was looking for my old friend Mitch Perry, who left school at the age of 16 to join the army. My travels, my business and a laptop crash delayed my efforts to write this letter over the past couple of weeks. My life is an endless shuttle between Beijing and Shanghai, and I do not often have time to write letters.

I don’t know how much you know or remember about my life after Purley but it has been a bit of an Odyssey. After leaving Purley I spent the better part of a year in Berlin testing my reflexes and then completed a degree in Chinese at Durham and I have spent most of my life since then, in various incarnations, involved in China, either from afar or on the ground here in the Middle Kingdom. I became a foreign correspondent, initially operating freelance and under cover in China and then later out in the open with Reuters.
Just as I was about to return to London and to join Reuters properly in 1982......to read the rest of Peter's note pls click on the link here
